Hey, if there are any traumagenic/DID/OSDD systems here, would you recommend a suspecting OSDD system to go to a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist, and why?

Ping me if you reply!

Thanks in advance :)

@Holistic Paradox - jump if you are suspecting to have osdd due to severe symptoms that affect your daily life i would recommend going to have it looked at by a doctor.

Nope, it isn't me.

the answer to “why” is to make the symptoms less severe to make life easier

It's a friend of mine, we just convinced their mother to get it checked, but we're unsure whether or not it would be better to go to a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist.

Oh, no, sorry for the misunderstanding. They're 100% going to get it checked, they're just unsure where to go

i would say a psychologist since psychiatrists often reduce their treatment to prescribing medication in 15min long sessions (even though they are qualified for therapy)

if the psychologist will think psychiatrist should have a look, they can refer her

Ah, alright, that's what they went with anyway lol.
10:52 AM
Is there any chance that the psychologist wouldn't believe in DID?
Avatar
there are different camps in psychology
10:53 AM
i don’t think there is any psychologist who wouldn “believe” but they would disagree on the underlying mechanism or the reasons for jt to manifest
10:54 AM
but none of that should matter because treatment looks the same
10:54 AM
the trap is when ptient gets self educated in did/osdd and absorbs harmful advice that brickwalls the treatme t and clashes against the therapist for not believing in did in the same way that the patient does

We're mainly unsure if they would get a diagnosis or not, because the mental healthcare when I'm from is not as good as other countries imo
Avatar
why does the diagnosis matter?
10:58 AM
if there are symptoms, treatment of the symptoms should matter
10:59 AM
keep in mind that there are multiple conditions that can be self misdiagnosed as did/osdd, even as not severe things as disorganised attachment style, but the treatment is still the same
10:59 AM
it’s not a label that is being treated by the person

Parents

Their parents don't believe them, but agreed to go to a psychologist/psychiatrist to get an answer

Yep, I agree with this, but hey, ignorant parents amirite
11:03 AM
Oh, they're specifically thinking of going to a "clinical child psychologist"
11:03 AM
Since they're still like. 13-14

While we do not have DID or OSDD, we are a tulpa system with trauma. We figured this out after CBT was not working and by finding EMDR therapy effective. If the end result isn't DID/OSDD, then it could be dysfunctional tulpa-like plurality presenting with other mental health issues. Treatment for those other issues will help them heal. Ultimately, not getting the DID/OSDD label doesn't mean there's something else going on or that your friend's pain is illegitimate. We still find it both helpful and important to go to therapy to talk about system dysfunction when it comes up (edited)
